Keep your words
I’m sure there are people in your life that you don’t take their words seriously. When they say they’ll do this, you know they’ll not. Why? Because they’ve had a track record of not keeping promises.
You can’t take their words to the bank. Any bank.
It’s likely that you’ve made promises you didn’t keep or forgot to keep. I want to remind you that it’s not healthy to break promises (people’s hearts) here and there. Yeah. People keep promises in their hearts. And when you don’t fulfil that promise, you break their hearts. You also deflate your integrity.
Anything that comes out of you is a representation (reputation) of you. And this is true for your words. If you promise it, do it. If you can’t, then don’t promise what is outside your power. You know, it’s possible to make a promise and later realize that promise is difficult or more expensive to keep. You don’t want to be caught in here. The idea of promising less and delivering more is and has been the best way to go.
In your absence, people tend to remember what you said to them. The promises you made. When we keep our words, we automatically build trust. Our integrity is strengthened and people don’t take us for granted.
Case in point:
You’re in dire need of money and you’re talking to a friend to lend you some money. If your friend trusts you enough, he or she will only ask you one question. ‘When are you paying back’? They’re asking for your words. Your integrity and your commitment to redeem your promise. Then you’ll say next month. Boom. Next month comes and some people will begin to pretend they forgot. If your friend is kind, he’ll remind you. Some will leave you to see if you will remind yourself and keep your words.
Circumstances could get beyond our control and life can happen. But our ability to reach out and acknowledge our words and humbly request for a bit of extension or re-negotiation is the most important thing.
This is what ensures you get help and assistance next time. And most importantly, your integrity would have been strengthened.
